What Is The Difference Between The Ground Wire And The Neutral Wire?

2025-03-19

The ground wire is the line that connects the outer shell of the equipment or electrical equipment to the earth to prevent electric shock accidents. The neutral wire is the three tail wires of the three-phase electricity connected together. At the moment of three-phase balance, there is no current passing through the neutral wire, which is directly or indirectly connected to the earth, and the voltage with the earth is also close to zero.

The difference between the two is mainly reflected in the role, wiring position and practical application, as follows:

1. Different role

The ground wire is mainly a protective wire, and no current passes through it. The neutral wire is mainly used in the working circuit, combined with the live wire, and current passes through it, and the current passing through each phase of the neutral wire is equal to the current passing through the corresponding phase of the live wire.

2. Different wiring position

The ground wire is the wire pulled out from the building grounding device, while the neutral wire is the wire pulled out after the neutral point of the transformer is grounded.

3. Different practical applications

If there is a good ground wire, it can effectively trigger the leakage protector to cut off the power, which plays a role in protecting the safety of electrical appliances. The entire system of the grounding protection line is connected in parallel and is not allowed to pass through the switch. As for the neutral line, each household can disconnect the neutral line by themselves.

It should be noted that the two cannot be interchanged. Once the ground wire is used as the working neutral line, if the current is too large, the grounding protection line will burn out. At this time, all the electrical enclosures below the disconnection point will be energized, which will bring greater risk of electric shock.
